HISTORY

In 1911, when the Bernina Railway began offering year-round service, horsedrawn sleighs covered the steep stretch between Cavaglia and Alp Grüm on grim winter days. The following year, the Bernina Railway provided a subsidy to the private Società Villegiature Cavaglia for the construction of an inn; in return, the premises were available to travelers without surcharge. Over the years, the building was taken over by the Bernina Railway; thereafter, it was sold to a private citizen of Poschiavo and the train station was converted to enable automatic operation. When the Albula/Bernina line of the Rhaetian Railway was included in the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2008, the striking station building also came under its protection. With the inauguration and expansion of the Glacier Garden, the number of visitors increased considerably. The destination needed a restaurant and overnight accommodation facility. In 2020, the Arner-Semadeni family succeeded in acquiring the beautiful building in order to return it to its original purpose as an inn. In 2023 the waiting room was converted into a bistrot.
